Yesterday I had the honor of sharing Kelsey and Nick’s beautiful rehearsal dinner with you all. (If you missed it, you can check that out here!) But today I am sharing highlights from their beautiful Memorial Day wedding in Fort Wayne!
They met by twist of fate. They both showed up late to rock climbing class while at IU (uhm.. coolest class ever!) and were partnered together by default. In rock climbing there is a phrase often used to ensure that your partner is safe and to let them know that you are there to support them. “On belay?” the climber will ask. “Belay on” the belayer will call. Total trust of your partner is required and together you work to help one another climb mountains. This seems perfectly symbolic for Kelsey and Nick who are one of those couples who dream big and make following those dreams a reality. Their mountains may take them all over this planet but one thing is for certain - they support one another fiercely. I know with certainty that Kelsey and Nick are going to handle anything this world has to give them - be it a rock climbing class or adventurous careers that might keep them apart for long periods of time. Whatever it may be, these two will always look out for one another. It's things like this that make being their wedding photographer so incredibly special.
Nick’s grandparents were kind enough to let the girls get ready in their home on the morning of the wedding. The home was full of hustle and bustle - with bridesmaids tucked away in various bathrooms and bedrooms having their hair done and painting their nails. Kelsey laughed with her makeup artists as they helped her transform into a bride! Kelsey is already beautiful, but her beauty team did such a wonderful job! Before long it was time to head to The Chapel where the ceremony would be. There, Kelsey’s bridesmaids helped her get ready. As she put on her breathtaking Maggie Sottero dress that she had picked out in Washington, D.C. - she grinned from ear to ear. You could tell this girl was ready to see her groom!
A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to photograph the wedding of Aryn and Drew - Drew being Nick’s best friend. Unfortunately Nick was not able to be there that day, but I did learn a lot about him by way of his best friends and how much they love each other. So when I first heard from Kelsey and Nick I was thrilled that I would be able to work with this awesome group again. Timing - being the tricky beast that it can sometimes be - Prevented Drew from being at Nick’s wedding (more on that later) however as soon as I walked into the room where the guys were getting ready I knew that he was in good hands. Everyone was joking around and when it came time to send him out the door for his first look with Kelsey, one of his groomsmen (shout out to Burt!) took it upon himself to help smooth out his uniform and make sure it was picture perfect. What a guy!
The First Look
We were able to find a secluded spot outside the church for Kelsey and Nick’s first look. As Nick turned around, his jaw dropped as he saw Kelsey for the first time. Kelsey grinned ear to ear and then promptly informed Nick that her dress had pockets. In case you don’t know this already - Kelsey is the coolest!
Introducing Mr. + Mrs. Haberly
Following a beautiful ceremony and some family photos, Nick and Kelsey exited the church to find their cheering friends and family, hundreds of bubbles and a saber exit where they stopped in the center to share a kiss! Next they boarded an all white trolley and headed off towards downtown Fort Wayne for wedding portraits! Despite the heat, this group was amazing! They laughed easily, made this part of the day so much fun and loved all over Kelsey and Nick. #friendgoals
Kelsey and Nick’s reception at Ceruit's was phenomenal! Not a detail was left untouched. Guests signed the “guest book” which was personalized wine corks and were then offered hors d’oeuvres before finding their seat at tables full of lush florals. Josh of Mazen DJ’s did an incredible job keeping the music going through out the evening and before long it was time to cut their stunning wedding cake made by For Goodness Cakes! What I loved about this part of the evening is that Kelsey and Nick had their friends and family gather around them and it made it SO SPECIAL. I love that and I hope that more of my couples opt to do this for future weddings! Next up, Kelsey and Nick shared their first dance as husband and wife, followed by Kelsey dancing with her father. However halfway through, he stopped and reached out to welcome Kelsey’s step father so that he could finish the dance. There was not a dry eye in sight! It was such a beautiful moment!
As the night wore on, amazing speeches were given by the best man and maid of honor. Nick and Kelsey were also sure to take time to honor their dear friends (including Drew and Logan) who could not celebrate with them due to the fact they were currently serving our country and were called elsewhere. They even made a video to send to them which was so cool! I mentioned their incredible friendships above, but I really have to express how special this group of friends really is. Just being around them filled my heart with so much joy! And laughter - ohhhh man can they make you laugh!
Kelsey and Nick’s wedding was one for the record books. I truly feel that even though we had never met in person until the night before the wedding that I have found friends for life. (Though the first time we Facetimed Kelsey DID hold up her cat to the camera to introduce me and I decided right then that she was my kind of person!) I can’t wait to cheer them on as they journey into this awesome thing called marriage.
Congratulations Kelsey + Nick. Belay on!
