Ohio State Reformatory | Wedding Inspiration
A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to road trip to Ohio with my good friend, Kaylee, to explore the incredible Ohio State Reformatory by way of wedding photography. I was able to combine my love of history and taking pictures, so it was something really special for me. You might recognize the reformatory as the setting for many popular movies, but most notably, The Shawshank Redemption. The prison holds a million stories within its walls. Chipped paint lines the bars of the towering cell block, a constant reminder of the conditions prisoners faced here. A certain chill brushes the back of your shoulders as you explore each section of the vast prison, built to resemble the old world castles of Germany. Each step taking you back in time and somehow connecting you to it’s dark past, if only for an hour or two. My favorite part of the prison was the chapel on the top floor. Pigeons have taken up residence here and as we made our way away from the chapel and through the cell block one pigeon followed us, which I have to admit - was a little weird.
Everyone who visits has their own opinion on the prison, but as for me, I found a certain peace and tranquility overall. This place somehow manages to be beautiful and terrifying all at once and is absolutely worth a visit!
